Tagging People in 2024: Mastering the Art of Attention Without Annoyance

Tagging connections on LinkedIn™ can be a double-edged sword. When done right, it grabs attention and boosts engagement. But when done wrong, it can fall flat or, worse, irritate your network. How can you make sure your tags don’t get lost in the noise? It’s simple: learn to tag strategically, or risk your efforts going unnoticed.

Curiosity Drives Engagement – But Only If It’s Seen

Let’s face it: few things demand attention more than a notification with your name on it. Tagging is like a little nudge, saying, “Hey, this is for you!” But in the digital world, curiosity isn’t always enough. We may not face the fatal curiosity of cats, but there’s a more modern danger: being ignored. Or worse, having your tags buried beneath a sea of unread notifications.

While you may log in to LinkedIn™ daily, your target audience might not be as active. You could be tagging your most valuable connections, but if they aren’t logging in regularly, they’ll miss that perfectly timed nudge.

The Reality of LinkedIn™ Engagement in 2024

Consider the data: In Q2 of 2024, there were approximately 170 million LinkedIn™ accounts registered in the European Union. However, only 48 million of those accounts were active monthly. That’s a staggering gap. Over 120 million users who might miss out on your content because they aren’t logging in regularly.

When you tag someone who isn’t active, your message may sit unnoticed for weeks. By the time they log in, it could be buried under more recent notifications. And let’s be honest: if it’s not on the first page, it might as well not exist.

How to Tag Smartly in 2024

So, how do you ensure your tags hit their mark? Here are some strategies:

  • Tag with Purpose: Only tag individuals who you’re certain will appreciate the content. If it’s irrelevant to them, you risk being muted or unfollowed.
  • Check Activity Levels: Before tagging someone, consider their recent activity. If they haven’t been active for weeks, your tag may go unnoticed.
  • Follow Up in Other Channels: If a tagged connection misses your message, try reaching out via email or direct message to ensure they see your content.
  • Stay Consistent with Engagement: Keep your audience engaged with regular posts, shares, and comments. That way, when you do tag them, it feels natural and welcomed.

Don’t Let Tags Go to Waste

Ultimately, tagging is only risky if you do it wrong. Misuse of this tool can lead to missed opportunities or, worse, strained relationships. In 2024, smart tagging means understanding your audience’s behavior, ensuring your tags are relevant, and timing them for maximum visibility.

Now’s the time to ask yourself: Are you tagging more or less than you were a year ago? And more importantly, are you doing it effectively?
