LinkedIn’s New Transparency Feature auto-tags AI images

Discerning between human-created and AI-generated images can be challenging. LinkedIn’s new transparency feature aims to make this easier for all users.

The Issue with AI Images

Often, AI-generated images are a dead giveaway due to common pitfalls in prompting. Bold colors and overcrowded scenes frequently indicate a simplistic one-line prompt fed into tools like DALL-E. However, some AI-generated images are less obvious, blending seamlessly into the content mix.

LinkedIn’s Solution: C2PA Icons

LinkedIn has introduced a feature that takes the guesswork out of identifying AI-generated content. By implementing C2PA (Content Authenticity Initiative) icons, LinkedIn ensures transparency for all users.

How Does It Work?

  • Flagging AI Content: When an image or video is uploaded, it gets flagged as “AI content.”
  • Overlay Icon: LinkedIn overlays a small black icon on the content, visible to all viewers.
  • Metadata Access: Clicking this icon allows users to view the associated metadata, providing details about the content’s origin.

This feature is mandatory; there’s no opt-out because transparency is the goal.

Does It Work?

According to LinkedIn’s help page, while it’s challenging to identify and label all AI-generated content, LinkedIn is committed to improving its detection capabilities through continuous learning and user feedback. Notably, identifying AI content does not affect its distribution on the platform.

The Broader Context

LinkedIn’s move follows other social media platforms that have already adopted similar transparency measures. This effort aligns with a growing trend toward more accountable and transparent content creation online.
